Wigan Observer , November 25th 2003 Roller-hockey aces triumph
A WIGAN roler-hockey side has booked a spot in Europe after storming through the British Championships.
The Wigan warlords U12s beat the Bircoat Bombers 5-2 in the final to clinch the title.
Manager Stuart Baybutt said "This was a remarkable achievement, the team consisted of only seven players and we were up against teams with 12 or more, We won the fair
play system as well."
The side, who train at Hawkley High School, are made up of youngsters from across the North West and captained by Up Holland High School pupil Andy Baybutt.
They swept aside the cream of the crop to land the British National Inline Hockey Championship, which is the showcase of roller hockey talent, with 12 regional champions taking part.
The first round of the championships saw the Warlords finish second in their group to qualify for the quater final place against North West rivals and the current kings of Europe, West Coast Wasps.
But the Warlords stormed into the semi-finals with a superb performance with a 4-0 win, and then defeated the Redditch Rockets 6-0 in a one sided semi-final to book their final place.
The team will now be looking to add to their success at the European Championships next year, which may be held in Poland.

Congratulations to our Youth
team on coming 9th at the BiSHA National Champions. Some excellent seeding
saw the team in a group with the winners 'Borehamwood Saracens;' the
runners-up 'Bircotes Bombers;' and 'Killamarsh Khaos' who finished 10th...
the four teams in the group could collectively do no better. With different
seeding I'm sure we would have achieved a much higher placing. We must
not forget that this team also finished WEMSHA Champions.

What can we say about the
Peewees in 2003? They have had a remarkable season. BiSHA National Champions;
BiPHA Runners-up; WEMSHA Champions; Manchester Puck League Champions.
All this with a squad of just seven players. Congratulations to Andy,
Pete, Alex, Sam, Liam, Dom and Mac.
Congratulations to
Matt Tarpey on being selected as captain for the
Great Britain Junior BiSHA squad. A well deserved honour for Matt. The
club are very proud of him.
Congratulations to
Steve Callaghan on being selected for
the Great Britain Junior BiSHA squad. Steve who is now playing ball
with North Wiltshire Vikings has matured into a very strong alround
player with great skill and an even more powerful shot. He must be one
of the youngest members of the GB squad.
Congratulations to
Matt Tarpey on being selected for
the Great Britain Junior BiSHA squad. Everyone who watches Matt play
can only marvel at his skills and skating ability.
His selection yet again reinforces the development within the Wigan
Warlords. We wish him well in his international career as he joins Paul
Ashall who was selected for the same squad last July.

A local skater hockey club is celebrating international success following
selection of their leading goal scorer, Paul Ashall for the Great Britain
BiSHA squad. Paul, 15, a pupil at Upholland High School has been playing
with the Warlords since it started in October 1996. He has consistently
demonstrated enthusiasm and selfless commitment not only in his own
performance, but also by his investment in the development of the younger
players within the club. Paul is the first ever player to be selected
for Great Britain in the Wigan area and is also the youngest player
in the international squad. Warlords SHC Manager, Pete Maguire says"
this is an outstanding achievement for Paul and also a reflection of
the club's development." The Warlords are the single most successful
skater hockey club in the North West having had four teams ranging from
6 to 16 year qualify for the national championships within the last
year.
The Club's management has always been committed to the development of
local talent and puts this down to their phenomenal success. "Loyalty
and respect amongst players have been crucial to our stability."
The Warlords are now looking forward to another exciting year as they
enter two new leagues, several national tournaments and a Canadian tour
in 2001. Anyone who wishes to support the Club's continued success can
